U.S. Hemp Legalization Puts CBD in the News

Passage of the 2018 Farm Bill Puts CBD in the News

CBD has been soaring to new heights of popularity in the health and wellness consumer sectors for years now, and recent legalization in the US, Mexico, and Canada is raising CBD awareness even higher all around the globe. A wave of legalization is following on the heels of increasing public demand for CBD in the form of capsules, tinctures, tonics, and creams. CBD is finding its way into beauty products, edible candies, and sports drinks as consumers embrace its many beneficial effects for enhancing active lifestyles and providing an unanticipated sense of overall well being.

Unlike many global consumer product trends, the driving factor behind the public relations success of CBD (cannabidiol) is not the result of any organized Madison Avenue marketing blitz. CBD is popular with the masses because it works. CBD gets results, and the health-conscious public hasn't bothered to wait for the official sanctions of scientific research to catch up on exactly why CBD works so well for so many disorders and symptoms. That said, it seems as if every day exciting new CBD research is revealing new therapeutic avenues for cannabidiol which are making headlines.

CBD and the Law

CBD in the NewsSince the dawn of civilization, hemp has been recognized throughout history as an effective, safe, "cure for what ails you", but only in the last half of the 20th Century has science begun to explain the actions of the individual active cannabinoids in hemp responsible for its therapeutic benefits. Now, the long-awaited legalization of the cannabis plant species hemp (the primary natural source for non-psychoactive CBD) is a reality, and the hemp revival is well underway. In 2019, we're seeing that even optimistic 2016 predictions that the CBD industry would see 700% growth fell far below the mark. A recent study by the Brightfield Group predicts CBD products alone will dominate the entire therapeutic cannabis industry with a market value of $22 billion by 2022.

The word about cannabidiol's effectiveness for treating a wide array of physical disorders and common mental maladies quickly spread across the globe from satisfied CBD users to health consumers. Today's informed consumers are seeking natural alternatives to addictive, and frequently dangerous, pharmaceuticals. At Modern Nature, we too have embraced the "naturopathic" approach to better fitness of mind as well as the body with CBD products tailored to provide safe solutions for sleep, anxiety, and pain management.

CBD, the non-toxic, non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in rich amounts in the hemp plant, is quickly emerging as the dominant cannabis-derived therapeutic, rocketing the long-besieged hemp plant back to the proper status it deserves as a staple agricultural crop. With the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill hemp is now under the jurisdiction of the USDA, offering American farmers a chance to cash in on what many are calling "the CBD liquid gold rush".

The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill makes CBD from hemp, and hemp only, available legally in all 50 states. To qualify as legal hemp, the cannabis source of CBD must have THC levels below .03%. Any THC content which is higher rules out that cannabis strain from being classified as a legal variety of industrial hemp. This is an important legal distinction to consider because the law as it stands now makes any CBD product derived from marijuana illegal at the federal level. Hemp and marijuana are both plant cousins in the Sativa L. cannabis species, but hemp's naturally low THC content gives it the advantage legally as well as therapeutically.

There are also some popular misconceptions making the rounds as a result of the Farm Bill. While hemp has been legalized as an agricultural crop for licensed growers it is not legal for the general public. If you've been thinking of growing your own wellness garden with a private crop of homegrown hemp, think again. As explained in an informative article at the Brookings Institution, "Ultimately, the Farm Bill legalizes hemp, but it doesn't create a system in which people can grow it as freely as they can grow tomatoes or basil."

Under the Farm Bill, there are serious penalties for cultivating hemp without a license or producing cannabis with more than .03% THC. Even so, the passage of the Farm Bill is a dramatic step forward for hemp specifically and the cannabis industry overall, as the therapeutic benefits replace the 20th-century "reefer madness" stigma so long held by the US government and the public.

The Impact of CBD on the Global Community
Michael J. Fox, CBD, and Parkinson's Disease

Michael J. Fox has been battling Parkinson's disease for decades now and the "Back to the Future" and "Spin City" actor has been instrumental in therapeutic cannabis research to manage symptoms of Parkinson's. He's founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research, a source for many clinical studies on the effects of CBD for alleviating symptoms of the neurological disease. CBD capsules were the subject of several clinical studies and showed promising results for Parkinson's patients including:

  • Decreased psychosis, hallucinations, and delusions (having false, often paranoid, beliefs)
  • Reduced symptoms of REM sleep behavior disorders (acting out dreams, sleepwalking)
  • Improved quality of life even if motor control symptoms remained
  • Preclinical studies showed that cannabinoids may protect brain cells with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Fox, who has been dealing with Parkinson's disease since being struck at the age of 29 says about CBD, "If there is anything working with CBD oil has shown me, it's that there is always hope. Even for the hopeless."

CBD-The Go-to Health Supplement

Michael J. Fox isn't the only celebrity taking the naturopathic CBD approach. An article at LA Cannabis News is calling CBD " the go-to health supplement of 2018, spotlighting Fox and three other celebrities who use CBD as their "secret health weapon". "Friends" actress Jennifer Anniston is quoted about her public endorsement of CBD for robust mental health saying in an interview with US Weekly, "CBD helps with pain, stress, and anxiety. It has all the benefits of marijuana without the high." Anniston's attitude reflects that of typical CBD consumers today, many who are professionals who are seeking to get healthy and maintain productive lifestyles without "getting stoned".

Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio relies on CBD for a rejuvenating 8-hour sleep as a preparation for hitting the runway. Ambrosio uses CBD to alleviate the night before anxiety. "It helps me sleep when I'm anxious".

In an interview with the NY Times, Broadway actress Olivia Wilde touted CBD as the alternative to taking handfuls of Advil for safely managing the aches and pains of performing day after day. Wilde said, "Recently I did a play on Broadway for six months, and my body was wrecked. My neck was really tight. The CBD has relaxing benefits, and the idea is to avoid using too many painkillers."

CBD Replaces Traditional Medication For Nearly Half Of All Users

CBD's nontoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and powerful antioxidant properties make it so effective for alleviating symptoms that 42%, nearly half of those who try cannabidiol, stop taking traditional medications (with their long list of debilitating side effects) altogether. A survey conducted jointly by the Brightfield Group and HelloMD found that the most common reasons people turn to CBD are to treat insomnia, depression, anxiety, and joint pain. 80% of those who try CBD products rate them as either "very or extremely effective". The 42% who stop using the traditional medications in favor of natural plant-derived CBD use it as a safer alternative to Tylenol, or potentially addictive prescription drugs such as Vicodin.
